HANGMAN`S HILL

by  Emotion  ( 2236 )

Posted: 19 April 2004
Word Count: 64
Summary: This is about where they used to publicly hang people on the Island of Coll where I used to live. The island is in the Inner Hebrides.

Hangman's Hill the dead man's hill
a mound with many a mood
where the hanging noose upon the neck
for lucky few did break

but most in truth did strangulate
a slow and painful death
with open bowels and urine flow
before that final gape

hushed is Hangman's Hill today
for dead men make no sound
bodies long since decomposed
their spirits all around.

Emotion - this has set me off on a long session on the internet, as it reminded me instantly of Hango Hill, on the Isle of Man, where I live. I have found mention of 'hanged, drawn and quartered', which I think is your reference in the second stanza.
I'm still searching - I feel a Found Poem coming on!

'hanged, drawn and quartered'
my reference refers to a slow strangulation death not the above which is something quite different. William Wallace was hanged, drawn and quertered or hung drawn and quertered as I might have said.

<Added>

should be quartered

Succincly said.

Very much reminded me of going to Anne Franks House in Amsterdam.
As if there was a river of spirits running through it .

When my little girl was born we called her Leanne the Anne part after Anne Frank. God Bless .

Patrick.
