She tried a hundred times
but barely managed to pull through
the corner of its lip.
And it was obstinate and spit.
Undefeated, she plucked each eyelash
and pushed them through
one by one.
She shaved its hair and slid each follicle
through the eye.
She killed it, cooked it, then sliced
its flesh in slivers.
She grated the bones and boiled
its eyeballs into shreds of jelly.
She coaxed each morsel through the hole.
It took a week and the biggest darning needle she could find
and all because he’d told her
that one so rich would never go to heaven.
