In the wondrous land of Africa, so far, far away
On the endless brown savannah, in the hot, hot day
Under a spreading thorn tree, dozing for a while
Stood Gorgeous George the Green Giraffe, an animal with style

Gorgeous George was quite a sight in red or blue or yellow
He changed his coat near every day, a fashion conscious fellow
And it never occurred to Gorgeous George, never entered his mind
That a green giraffe was a very odd thing for anyone to find

All the other giraffes in the group thought Gorgeous George was funny
They wouldn’t be seen in a coat of green, not for love nor money
Nobody really minded his coats but couldn’t wear one themselves
Said “who does our George think he is, one of the gnomes or elves?”

But one day when a lion came by looking to catch his dinner
All the giraffes hid in the bush wishing they could be thinner
But Gorgeous George just stood still knowing he wouldn’t be eaten
‘Cause a green giraffe was quite unknown and had the lion beaten

And when the lion had finally gone and back to George they strolled
All the giraffes wanted his coats and offered him silver and gold
So Gorgeous George the Green Giraffe, a very clever fellow
Started to make them brand new coats in red and blue and yellow

And to this day the locals say, the reason giraffes look brown
Is only the dust they get on their coats with no one to brush them down
For under the dust that looks like rust their coats are just like Georges
In every colour known to man and absolutely Gorgeous.
