You Walked

You said:
“Trust me,
I will always be there”.

You said:
“Believe me,
I will never leave you”.

You said,
“My love
Is unconditional”.

You said all this
And more,
Much more.
But for all your talk,
Your oh so eloquent words,
You walked.

You told me
I was a victim
Of my conditioning,
Not wanting to believe
My actions
Were driven
By instinct.
Nothing else.

You told me
I was shallow,
Refusing to believe
That my words
Were driven
By honesty
Nothing else.

You told me
I wasn’t prepared to fight
That I would live to regret,
Refusing to believe
That my final act
Was driven by compassion,
Nothing less.

And so,
You walked,
Leaving in your wake
The power of
Your love
Diametrically transposed.
