Faultlines


“These new potatoes are nice.”
He supposed it was inevitable how things had evolved. What was left wasn’t even worth calling a failed relationship. The marriage had been a chasm that had eventually swallowed the two of them. Everything was gone in the years.
“There’s talk at work of redundancies.”
He stared across the table at her. She was either ignorant of his gaze or untroubled by it as she continued with her meal. He thought about saying something else but the faultlines of their life together were exposed in these little silences. He wondered what it would take to fix things, and then wondered if he really cared enough anyway. She continued to work methodically at the food on her plate.
He was getting Picture But No Sound.
