Nabokov pair to lead Paines Plough

  Posted on 03/02/2010

George Perrin and James Grieve are set to become joint artistic directors of new writing theatre company Paines Plough, replacing Roxana Silbert in February next year.

The duo will vacate their current roles as joint directors of Nabokov, a theatre company they co-founded, where they will be replaced by Joe Murphy.

During their time at Nabokov, where they will remain on the company's board, the pair were responsible for staging several productions including Artefacts by Mike Bartlett at the Bush Theatre which had an off-Broadway run following a national tour.

"We are thrilled to be have been appointed joint artistic directors of Paines Plough," they said in a statement.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity to build on the company's illustrious 35-year history and the incredible achievements of Roxana Silbert."

David Edwards, chair of the Paines Plough board, added: "James and George have already established themselves as exceptionally talented directors and have demonstrated in their work with writers that they share the core values of Paines Plough. Under their artistic leadership we are confident that Paines Plough is entering another exciting phase."

Silbert, who will now assume associate director responsibilities for the Royal Shakespeare Company, was responsible for a number of successful plays at Paines Plough, including Steve Thompson's Roaring Trade and Dennis Kelly's Orphans.
