Celebrate National Poetry Day on Thursday 7 October 2010
Posted on 14/09/2010On National Poetry Day readers and writers young and old will mark the seventeenth National Poetry Day with the theme of Home.
A poem by National Poetry Day Poet-in-Residence Daljit Nagra will be unveiled on the National Poetry Day website. Members of the public around the country, from Land’s End to John O’Groats and the Giant’s Causeway, will also show off their poetic flair and be creative for a day, celebrating home in verse, with events inspired by their homes, their towns or countries of origin, and things associated with the home, from cups of tea to washing-up! Why not also use the day to visit a poet’s home?

The Historic Dockyard Chatham’s first ever Poet in Residence Patience Agbabi will perform a corona of 7 sonnets, Chains, which she has written during her residency, sonnets which forge the vital links between the site’s unique architectural legacy and the voices of those who have helped to shape its incredible 450 year history. Bristol Central Library will host Renga Master Alan Summers of literature organisation ‘With Words’ as he collects short verses from library visitors to create a multi-voiced renga poem similar to those traditionally created in Japan. Specially adapted to reflect the day's theme of Home, and what that means in Bristol, the poem will be developed throughout the day.

Swansea
Paul Henry, one of Wales’ leading poets, launches The Brittle Sea: New and Selected Poems (Seren). Originally a songwriter, Henry has authored five collections and has read at festivals across the UK and Europe. He recently presented the 'Inspired' series of arts programmes for BBC Radio Wales. Reading with him is Swansea poet and teacher Richard James Jones, who is working with Paul under the Academi’s mentoring scheme for talented young writers.
