A benchmark in travel literature. While maintaining a vaguely misanthropic outlook throughout his train journey from Boston to Patagonia, Theroux never once fails to entertain. He also succeeds in capturing the magic of Latin America and the allure of carefree travel. A companion piece to his ‘The Great Railway Bazaar’, the two combine to provide some of the finest travel writing of the last forty years. Superb, and quite possible the anti-Bryson.
