Pullman's epic trilogy has been crammed into two parts, each three hours long at the Olivier Theatre. Obviously, a lot has been cut (notably Mary Malone) but overall the adaptation is a triumph. Daemons and Armoured bears come alive with some amazing puppets, the stage revolves, rises up, disappears into the basement and generally transforms every three minutes, and the two leads (both in their twenties) make convincing twelve year olds. Timothy Dalton and Patricia Hodge do a nice turn as the adults, but Lyra steals the show.
It's a fantastic spectacle with plenty to wonder at, but it doesn't forget to leave room for the audience's imagination.
