Nulliparous’ is a set of lithe and witty stories, very fresh, very now; it is as if Zoe Fairbairns is talking straight to you. Some of the ideas she explores are immediately topical, and although her touch is light, her intention is serious. These are clever stories. In particular ‘Looking for a Loner,’ is a real eye opener.
She makes neat observations about the irritating habits people engage in and the little traps men and women get themselves into, while denying the facts. You smile when you recognise something she writes you’d often thought yourself but not said, and it’s a delight to see it expressed with ease and humour.
She is inventive in the way she sets the scene to explore infidelity in ‘It Just Happened.’ In ‘Bus Ticket Re-visited,’ a very ‘London’ story, she cleverly escalates the tension with a rolling bottle.
‘Must Get Together in the New Year’ is a neat story about empty gestures, one not to forget when the new year comes round again.
She covers many angles of the conundrums facing women today in ‘Nulliparous,’ a wide-ranging story full of thoughtful observations about women and how they view themselves and each other.
