| Recently made into a movie starring Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connolly, this is one of the most utterly bleak novels I've ever read- and believe me, there's been a few. If you've ever wondered how some people's lives suddenly spiral out of all control, then this is the book that shows you exactly how that happens. Obsessive love, jealousy, the desire for safety and status and the shadows of guilt are this book's haunting themes. An Iranian immigrant struggling to improve his family's exiled life clashes with an alcoholic troubled young woman, who in turn meets a married policeman who has no brakes or control over his emotional attachment to her. Ooh, it still makes me shiver. Beautifully taut, and a bit unputdownable- there's a passage where the alcoholic Kathy slips back into drinking, while in complete self denial that is painful to read. An author to bookmark, definitely, but don't read it if you're feeling shaky. |
