| Winner of the Booker Prize a couple of years ago, this is the story of two slightly odd sisters, the men they inadvertently share- not giving anything away, you'll guess from early on anyway- and the destruction wreaked by keeping secrets. Following on from the themes of earlier books- women's secrets and lies, the half lives they live and how they attempt to break out, leaving broken glass everywhere around them in their wake- this is breathtaking. A really well-crafted book- not just character and plot, but the handling of the timeshifts is masterly, a writer at the top of her game. Strangely, the women didn't move me, but I was fascinated by them and by the webs they are both caught in, and leap into. Also- read this if you're writing- or want to write- anything that juggles different timescales, narrative voices, intricate subplots etc. |
