Director Jane Campion, aided by a brave, intelligent performance by Meg Ryan, has produced a challenging movie exploring seriously the unsettling but fascinating relationship between sexuality, love and romance. It is a film about the deepest needs of human beings who happen to be male and female rather than a lazy comfortable portrayal of the interaction between simplistic gender stereoypes. Impressively, a woman director has explored the theme of a female character, perfectly realised by Ryan, who is both repulsed by the domineering aggressive, masculinity of men – yet drawn irresistibly towards it. Thought provoking and honest; worth catching up with.
