About the course

How long is a short story? 5000 words? 500? Over the course of ten weeks, Tania Hershman will show you just how few words it can take to write a gripping and powerful story. Economy of words is a vital skill for any writer, whether you are writing poetry, film scripts, songs or novels. The course will include prompt-based writing techniques to free your imagination, critique of your writing, suggestions for further reading and resources for where to submit to. How long is a short story? Just as long as it should be, no more, no less.

About the Tutor

Tania Hershman, a former science journalist, is the author of The White Road and Other Stories, (Salt Modern Fiction, 2008) which was commended by the judges of the 2009 Orange Award for New Writers. Tania's stories have been published in literary magazines including the London magazine, Litro, Smokelong Quarterly, Riptide, BRAND and Dogzplot, and broadcast on BBC Radio. A week of her flash fiction will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2010. She is the Grand Prize winner of the 2009 Binnacle Ultra Short competition, and European regional winner of the 2008 Commonwealth Short Story Competition. Tania is the founder and editor of The Short Review, a journal dedicated to reviewing short story collections, the current Fiction Editor of Southword magazine, and one of the judges of the 2010 Bristol Short Story Prize,Brit Writers Awards and the Sean O'Faolain short story competition.
