Present problems

Summary: Just thought I'd share one of my Christmas 'repertoire'! I have read this (well, almost acted it really) at a couple of Christmas concerts/Carol services recently. Like them or not, the rhyming ones do go down well!

It cost a fortune at the Post Office – I should have sent them vouchers.
They can just buy what they want then – so it’s better.
But I think it looks a little bit impersonal, don’t you?
Like the photocopied circulated letter.

It’s difficult to know just what to buy these days, I know,
when everyone has everything they need.
I’ve been ages on the internet and trudging round the shops,
and………. actually ………. a lot of it is greed.

I’m sure you all agree with me – the problem is the men.
Whatever do you buy – they’re all the same.
A DVD, a shirt and tie, a pair of socks, a sweater,
a gift with an engraving of their name?

It’s a nightmare – who would do it? Well, the ladies would, that’s true!
Admit it – who buys presents in your house??
No – I mean, the routine ones, the relatives, the neighbours
Not the only one – the present for your spouse!

Sorry?? Did you say something? I can’t believe I heard that!
Do I know what all this means? Of course I do!!
But…I’ve got no time for Jesus now, for Heaven’s sake!!– it’s Christmas!!
I’m too busy wrapping presents – so should you!!

Hi joanie, you're so good at these rhyming ones, and you're right, they're much appreciated. This prompted a smile followed by a twinge of alarm as I've hardly done a thing yet. I like the way the narrator is so concentrated on the present problems that she can be that unashamedly dismissive in the last stanza. There's a great tone to the whole poem, her voice comes across beautifully.

But…I’ve got no time for Jesus now, for Heaven’s sake!!– it’s Christmas!! is brilliant.

Nell.

Thanks for reading, Nell! I have done very little too. How can anybody send Christmas cards in November?? Must dash - lots of Christmassy things to do!

Joanie that is clever I needed to read it a couple of times to get the meter of it but once that sorted a nice piece.

By the way can you tell me when Christmas is this year in fact judging by the shops I thought I had missed it .

Take care and thanks, oh yes and in answer to your question of course you can post it there I was trying to generate a Winter solstice/ Christmas poem page but sadly with so far little response so thanks for your efforts
