Big Bother

Summary: So many things are riling me at the moment. I needed to channel some rage and my target was either those little St George flags on cars or this.

I used to love this time of year,
Summer's knock upon the door.
But now the season's wrecked again,
Big Brother's back once more.

I know it's just a TV show,
I can always change the channel.
I can't miss those who watch it though
And bore me with their flannel!

It's worst when I head off to work,
A half-hour long commute,
For BB's biggest fans, it seems,
Have joined me on this route.

'Did you see Deklan have his strop?'
They lap it up. I wince.
'Or what about that one last week
When Shell got off with Vince!'

'Yeah, Deklan lost his pack of fags.
I swear that Tasha nicked it'
I understand fans like to chat
But why must they inflict it

On me, and all the others here,
Crammed into the train.
If I hear once more how Craig got drunk
I think I'll go insane!

At last, we're there! I hear one say,
'Who d'ya think'll win it?'
My wish is that the house falls down
With all those half-wits in it!

It's nice to know we're not alone when the rest of the world seems to lose the plot over Big Brother / Football / whatever . . . but I think it is designed that way to stop us actually doing anything unified about ongoing serious issues.
This piece is a good example of modern frustration, and the best thing about it is that the rhyming seems so natural. It adds to the flow, creating a sturdy frame for the theme.

Rage on! I expect you may remember the era when if the TV is switched of it leaves a tiny spot that lingered. Unblanked persistence. Is that what those TV folks are selling? Stickability?

I thought (still think) IQ will gradually increase untill we switch off in enmasse and not even QI will remain.........let alone BB.

Nice poem, by the way...the half rhyme works really well to pull the reader along without being obsessive....

Hi Anthony. I am so sorry. I had the voice of Pam Ayres in my head as I read this. Perhaps that is not such a bad thing. Her poetry was known for its simple style and astute observation on everyday subject matters, which you have captured superbly! Plagious

The nearest I get to BB is my daughter telling me not to ring her when it's on! It would drive me mad listening to it on my way to work; I have every sympathy for you!

It needs to be read aloud....... con spirito, preferably while seated on the train. They might even all get up and leave you alone!

I enjoyed it very much.

Heya Ant :)

Mellifulously flowing and articulate piece :) I hope you do one about the flags too :) They drive me mad now I'm here in England (went into my local morrisons yesterday and they're bloody everywhere). Fair do's, be patriotic, but ffs, football, how about something that matters ;)

I get you on this one too, I inevitably end up sat next to some 15 year old girl on the bus every morning and evening yelling down the phone to her mate chatting about this s**t, thanks for expressing this anguish so clearly :)
