‘2’ made a handsome pair alone
tho’ ‘1’ was on the shelf,
but, when ‘2’ took this loner home
they made the perfect ‘12’

‘1’ stuck like glue
to number ‘2’
‘2’
always followed ‘1’
Like loves young dream,
till on the scene
/ came to spoil their fun.

Forward / went after ‘1’
and placed himself between.
Alas, alack, now ‘2’ looks back
at love that might have been.

For perfect ‘12’, / dozen care -
he cruelly gave a laugh,
and soon reduced the loving pair
to no more than a ‘1/2’

So, numbers all,
take heed the call
and warn your sons and daughters.
For / adores, both ‘3’s and ‘4’s
and turns them to ‘3/4’!

A simplistic piece, concealing a clever idea concealed in a sophisticated structure. It made me laugh which is always nice!

Nice one!

A witty piece. You've got rhyme-play as well as word-play and number-play! Rhyme-play as when it takes us a second (or longer, if slow on the uptake) to realise that 'laugh' rhymes with 'half', not with 'one-slash-two'. After that even the slowest-on-the-uptake will realise that 'three-slash-four' doesn't rhyme with 'daughters'. Rhyme-play is part of the fun, and the whole thing is entertainingly wacky.

Great, Mike! I know it from last time around, but it's just as good.
