Summary: Listening to early 60s surfing music whilst stuck in a traffic jam is probably not such a good idea as it tends to highlight and contrast youthful dreams with middle-aged reality

I’ve been sitting here now on the M25
stuck in another sodding great jam,
and thinking back to when I felt alive
and of what I once was, and of what I now am.
With my old retrospective audio tapes
of my teenage heroes, the great Jan and Dean,
when I’d play Brian Wilson, and dream of escape
and perhaps become part of that sun n’ surf scene.
But this slow-moving traffic elicits a smile
while they’re singing they’ll burn up that short quarter mile,
‘cos I realised that, not being able to swim
was a huge disadvantage when ‘shooting the curl’
So I cruised around town singing ‘I Get Around’
and spent all my efforts on landing a girl!
I went out with loads till I found the right one
and I cannot pretend it was all ‘Fun Fun Fun’
Still - the mortgage is paid and I like who I am …..
But I’m really pissed-off sitting here in this jam!
