Summary: Churchill apparently refered to his depression as his black dog which seems a very apt metaphor.

Winston had a large black dog
It followed him about
While Winston slept
It chased his dreams
Or lay there round and stout
It licked his face
It bit his hand
It growled
It snarled
It smelt
It gnawed away at Winston's faith
In God
In man
In self.

Enjoyed this - the rhyme and rhythm is spot-on, and a good contrast to the subject matter.

Brilliant. As a Celt, and an occasional victim of visits by that beast, which I call by the same name - I think Byron coined it first - I recognise your poem's perspicacity all too well. More!

best,

Mike

One of those moments when a piece sits with you and you cannot fault it, other than to say it belongs somewhere with more prestige (no offence here to anyone) than our little site. Loved it.

Great, every dog owner knows and relates to this. not showing it to my Molly might give her ideas.

Peter - May I ask a naive question, as no one else has asked? Was it your intention that this is read with the same intonation as 'Mary had a little lamb'?

Thank you for your kind comments which are deeply appreciated.
Bluesky,Hi ,yes the links with the nursery rhyme are supposed to increase the irony but not in a way that detracts from the content!

Hi Peter

I,like many others, suffer periodic bouts of depression it is good to know that even the "Mighty" are afflicted, yet can still achieve their goals and dreams
your poem, somehow puts the illness in its place-like all large black dogs they should be left outside!

thank-you for your kind comments on my poem

regards

Colin

Winston was a large black man
His dog was black as coal
The dog was wild
A naughty child
But Winston
Had a soul.
One rainy day
Dog ran away
While searching
For a bone.
How Winston Cried
Searched Far
and Wide
For now
he was

<Added>

I didnt read that it referred to Churchill! - Oh how or ideas are now developed by our personal contacts rather than History!

Perhaps it should now read:

Winston was a man of might
His dog was black as coal
The dog was wild
A naughty child
But Winston
Had a soul.
One rainy day
Dog ran away
While searching
For a bone.
How Winston Cried
Searched Far
and Wide
For now
he was
