If I had the knowhow and the land, I'd work
the fields,
grow parsnips and potatoes.
And late in the day
when the sky turned the colour of pepto-bismol
I'd come in,
soil on my hands and sweat on my clothes;
run a bath, and soak the day's work from my bones.

I should credit Tom Waits, as there are a couple of references in this to lines in his songs. It wasn't particularly intentional - they just seemed to fit.

Hi Xenny. I can't help feeling as I read this that I want to sing!! The fire thing is very strong............

You know, I really love the minimalist, and I can't help but think that the last 8 lines would be just excellent on their own!
If I had the knowhow and the land, I'd work
the fields -
grow acres of potatoes and parsnips and wheat
And late in the day
when the sky turned the colour of pepto-bismol
I'd come in,
soil on my hands and sweat on my clothes;
run a bath, and soak the day's work from my bones.
What do you think?

Hi joanie,

For some reason I didn't see an email notification when you responded to this and so didn't realise that you had. Thank you. And you were absolutely right - I've gone with your suggestion.

Hi Xenny. Great to see you. I have to confess that I had forgotten this one! Last August seems like an eternity away!

Look forward to seeing more of you!

Joan
