Anticipation of
red turning shiny
black taunts
my taste buds

until
suddenly

they are ready.

Fingers stained
burgundy blood-red,
scratched and stinging,

pluck and
pick,
discard
and taste

until

a brimming bowl of
nature's bounty
sits in splendour

on my

compost heap

Heehee especially this year. I've hardly found any that were worth picking! There'd be a nice balance of the until, visually if you dropped 'suddenly' but it's picky if you'll forgive the terrible pun...

Thanks, Oonah. They're very late here but there are lots. I must get my act together and use some!

You're right about the 'until' I think. I hadn't even realised that I'd got two untils until you mentioned it! (Two more now!!) That's Flash for you.

You can't get more seasonal than than brambles and blackberries. No doubt what time of the year this is.

Cheers

At first I thought the use of 'nature's splendour' was a bit unoriginal...until I read the last two lines. You have a lovely knack for a sweet simple bathos (I hope that's not rude!). Your description of mucky stained stinging fingers is spot on. Although this reminded me of a time when I was eating stewed blackberry and apple some years ago and almost ate a cooked wasp. That's the only thing missing from here, the damn wasps and blue bottles!!
