John decided today was a good day. With the roof down on his Porsche, the sun warmed his skin and wind ruffled his hair. The miles streamed past and all was well… until he looked in the rear-view mirror.

The blue light in the distance seemed miles away, nevertheless John thought it best to pull over. As the police car came to a gravel crunching stop behind him, John was about to get out when he saw the large policeman leap from the car.

“What do you think you’re playing at? I’ve followed you at speeds of up to a hundred miles per hour. I’ve flashed lights, sounded sirens; I’ve tried everything to get you to stop! What would you have done if I’d been desperate to get to an emergency?”

John’s mind urged his mouth to stop, but it was too late…

“Well officer, I’d have got there first?”

Ha ha.

I thought this was going to be about the man who, when asked by a boy scout if they could do a bob-a-job for him, handed them a pot of green paint and asked them to paint his porch while he went to the shops...

Nice one, Dave. A fun illustration of how a few hasty words can get us in a whole lot of trouble!

David. Sometimes you know better but you just have to say it anyway. You made me laugh with this one and I thank you for that. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave, sorry to be less positive, but I'm not sure the end of the story works.

I've been done for speeding a couple of times and cops usually say something like it is dangerous and irresponsible to drive above the speed limit.

What they don't say is:

What would you have done if I’d been desperate to get to an emergency?”

as that does not really have any bearing on the matter.

I've been stopped too and found that a sense of humour goes a long way. The police say any number of things, especially when they're irate so maybe this isn't so unlikely? Done for a bit of cringeworthy fun rather than a Pullitzer I'm afraid...

Thanks anyway Nick!

I found the line unlikely too but I went with the flow!

not sure if "leap" is the right word here:

"when he saw the large policeman leap from the car."

maybe it's just me but it sounds like he's on top of it!

Fun one Dave; I've always followed a simple rule with policemen: let them be the funny one! Thanks for taking part and a gold medal for being first up. ;
