You think you are happy
the voice would say
beneath the bone of your brow

With one click of a switch
your world sickens
pleasure turned to pain
memories betrayed
happy places made forlorn
joy smeared with shadow and ash

How do you like it now?

The solitary seed of a melancholy thistle
has blown in
time out of mind

Taken root uninvited
hidden on the verge
of this forgotten memory

Don't engage it
don't detain it
let it flower and bloom
welcome the wispy thistledown
and blow it safely away.

Such an ominous beginning, Bill

You think you are happy
the voice would say
beneath the bone of your brow

and the image is so apt and true that

The solitary seed of a melancholy thistle
has blown in
time out of mind

always an invasive weed in our happy garden! I have to say I love your advise concerning these troubling aspects in life. We just have to let it wash over us if we want to be free. I'm not very good at doing that and so I found this poem refreshing to the spirit! Thank you, Bill.

Whimsical, Bill. From little acorns big oak trees grow. An injunction not to dwell on things too much?
Nip them in the bud while you still can?

Thanks Oonah. I'm afraid I was over 50 before I was able to "blow it safely away." The poem fails if it suggests this is an easy thing to do. Most often a puff is not enough.

Thanks Michael. I suppose what I intended was a plea that you need to somehow take away the power from something insidious. I think it is the most difficult thing in the world.

I’m not sure I’ve worked out how to do that yet.  Not sure I ever will.  That seed can germinate into a triffid in my head if I cultivate it long enough.

For me it’s that feeling of not tempting fate too...don’t say everything’s going well.  Don’t vocalise it or you will call upon something that changes your situation pretty damn quick!

with one click of a switch
your world sickens

I can over think the smallest problems into world shattering events.  I do hope that the universe knows that I just have a vivid imagination laugh and that I’m not manifesting!

Great poem, Bill.

Thanks Jo-Ann. I know what you mean. Vivid imagination is good but world shattering events are rare. Probability is on your side!
