Eve Ann Prentice Interview

Journalist Eve Ann Prentice joined a local newspaper in Lincolnshire aged 17 and completed the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ three year course which included on the job training and college courses. Since then she has been Balkan correspondent for the Times and is now freelance, writing regularly for a number of newspapers including the Times, Daily Telegraph, Economist, Guardian and Irish Times

I wanted to be a reporter from the age of 17 when I was at a convent boarding school with no access to newspapers, TV or radio. That made me hungry for news.

I learned on the job- in at the deep end and being shouted at by a very sharp news editor who drummed the essentials into me. I went on to work for the Peterborough Evening News, followed by a freelance agency feeding the nationals called South-West News Service, the Western Daily Press, based in Bristol but serving a large swathe of south-west England, and then the Guardian as a junior sub-editor attached to the foreign desk
