Buddha made of terracotta

The terracotta buddha
guards a garden's calm,
blackbirds blessing him
with white dabs of bird.

Wearing the weather,
fitted with leaf & twig
snails glossed on lips
eyes covered in web,
his nature redressed.

A soft red man baked
by hard western hands,
casting slow shadows
across short cut grass.

Wonderful poem, John. "with white dabs of bird" was so unexpected, a solid image. And the last stanza is spare and complete -- very full image.

Just lovely,

Smith

I read the other 'buddhas' and didn't comment, ........... but as I continue to read, I am feeling more and more inclined to 'add my bit'. I just love the 'white dabs of bird', 'eyes covered in web', but especially the last stanza.... lovely

John

one of the beauties of poetry is that poets look at every day scenes and describe or create an image in such a totally diferent but extremely effective way form the images or description that most see.

You have achieved that with this piece, thank you

take care

John, 'a godless garden' is asking to be poem too. Like joanie I read the other Buddhas, and am being drawn in. I love this, it has the feel of haiku - a less is more philosophy, and I wanted to be in that garden. 'Eyes covered in web' dismayed me, but only because I'm working on a villanelle with the line 'the web you spin is covering my eyes...' 'A soft red man/baked by hard western hands' - every line is so telling it's difficult to choose.

Nell.

Sorry, I miss-typed the line break, it should be: A soft red man baked/by hard western hands...
