Faultlines

“These new potatoes are nice.”
He supposed it was inevitable how things had evolved. What was left wasn’t even worth calling a failed relationship. The marriage had been a chasm that had eventually swallowed the two of them. Everything was gone in the years.
“There’s talk at work of redundancies.”
He stared across the table at her. She was either ignorant of his gaze or untroubled by it as she continued with her meal. He thought about saying something else but the faultlines of their life together were exposed in these little silences. He wondered what it would take to fix things, and then wondered if he really cared enough anyway. She continued to work methodically at the food on her plate.
He was getting Picture But No Sound.

Excellent stuff Mac. What a way to end! "He was getting Picture But No Sound" (in both senses of the word).
In some relationships silence can be a positive thing (no I'm being serious here) but clearly in this one they expose the truth that everything has gone.

As they say in the Black Country "bosting"

Wonderfully descriptive grim piece! Again I loved the last line.

I could just feel the sense that if he didn't get out of that relationship soon, the hostility would slowly eat away at him, until there was nothing left!

Run while you can! (MC)

Well done!

Beautiful stuff Mac, so few words and indeed so few words required. Wonderful last line, just brilliant.

Best

Mac,

This is such a fantastic line - "The marriage had been a chasm that had eventually swallowed the two of them."

This is just so hopelessly sad. I can hardly even think of anything to say, just like them, just that sense of inevitability.

Wonderful. Sigh.

Take care
Andrea
