When life casts its shadow it touches those who care
Cloaking us from happiness all who gather there
The darkness that it gives us reminds us of the light
That stretches in the distance lost and out of sight
The warmth of the sunshine is taken for a while
Its strips us of our confidence its snares our every smile
As dark clouds gather round us at every endless turn
And hopeful thoughts are strangled by longing and concern

Then through the darkness comes a breath of air new and clear
And calls us to a place we missed so comfortable and near
Smiling people gather there with arms open wide and true
The sentiments they hold are of genuine love for you
And with this swathing air of truth the shadow starts to fall
Receding to its origin so manageable and small
The clouds will part the sun will shine with vigour, strength and hope
And leave us without enough to see that love will make us cope.

Finally the darkness has gone back to where it rose
And left a mark of influence that’s clear but never shows
The past is but experience that life taught us we must learn
In order to be compassionate, have faith, love and concern
And sure enough the day will come when darkness looms again
The shadow will fall on someone else with its sadness and pain
He who has felt darkness can touch the light you need to send
To let the brightness back in again, my thoughts with you my friend.
