Sudan

The hammer
hammer hammer,
of money
money money,

hits the distant
hills of Sudan,
and ecohes down
the empty wadies
as people turn
& listen, thinking
if there is thunder
surely soon
there will be
the sound of rain.

Slowly they starve
hearing nothing
but our distant
cash machines
drumming,

the hammer
hammer hammer,
of money
money money.

JGH,great one here, too many making money out of other peoples poverty.

You explained it well.

Would be nice if we could turn the tables and say no money for you, live in drought, without food for a year.
Doubt they would learn then.

Well done.

John, you have dealt with this subject effectively - I particularly like the repetition, both of the words and the beginning and end. They starve while our cash machines drum is a sobering thought.

I would declare war on the rich to be perfectly honest. There are too many people living it up and too many people living it down.

I like your piece, the feel of it and the message. I wonder, though, how much propaganda plays a part in all this. How long will we hear about Sudan? Until the media moguls get bored and it disappears off our screens?

Hi John,

I like the opening repetition of the first stanza, hammering hard the impact of the words, bringing a more solid meaning to the message.

You've said so much in this poem that it really struck a chord in me reading it.

Powerful stuff.
