Song of Innocence

There are no bad children (Chorus)
born into the world
we show them how to hate
teach them how to kill
this madness has to stop
before it is too late
and the best of us
are lying cold and still

He swaggers, AK7 on his hip
terrified, the watchers catch their breath
lost innocence leers upon his curling lip
this child’s toy is death.

A jacket of oblivion hugs him tight
evil lies about eternity
despair recruits him to the fight
his death is an obscenity

Among the seeds of shame
the laughing children play
one wrong step and death’s the game
and guilty fathers turn away

There are many different ways
to the same eternal peace
the universal child just wants to play
corruption of his innocence must cease.

There are no bad children…….

A very strong message here, Zettel!

This has echoes of some of those 60s and 70s protest songs - and a vibe, for me, of Bert Jansch's 'Needle of Death', although the subject matter is different (his was drugs - a brilliant song!)

Some great imagery. I liked He swaggers, AK7 on his hip
terrified, / the watchers catch their breath
.

And There are no bad children / born into the world / we show them how to hate / teach them how to kill is a message that needs to be shouted long and hard around the world!!

Well done

John

Zettel so much within in this ( should it not be AK47 minor point ) a strng message which is so sadly a reflection upon all of us, those who do nothing are as equally to blaim.

this sums up the message I think so well the universal child just wants to play
corruption of his innocence must cease.

There are no bad children…….

Thanks David and John

I think we all feel disturbed by the dreadful sights on TV of the children in all parts of the world whose childhood is being stolen from them and who are being used by cynical men to further personal political or religious goals. There is so little one can do about it that a song of protest seems one way at least of expressing one's disgust.

I'll check out the point you make John - great thing about a song is that you can usually squeeze in another syllable more easily than in a poem.

Must say I'm beginning to get frustrated at not being able to to put music to anythting.

Regards

Z
