Visual inspiration

Posted on 10/02/2009 by  Diane Becker

I posted this image [see full post] on my page at Six Sentences but thought I’d post it here as well. One person said she’d found it inspiring and asked if I minded if she used it as starting point for a poem. It makes me happy if people want to use my work as visual inspiration [more ...]

A tag... and one more deadline!

Posted on 10/02/2009 by  titania177

As the Israeli General Election creaks along today in the background, accompanied by storm-like conditions and great wind, I've been tagged by Lauri at Thoughts from Botswana and this is a good one so I am happy to be a taggee. Here is what I am commanded to do:
List at least five things you do to support and spread a love of the written word, then tag five people. (If you list something that touches youngsters, you get a bonus letter!)
Ok, here are my five things:

Strictly Writing - Quickfire Questions with... Della Galton

Posted on 09/02/2009 by  Account Closed

Della Galton sold her first story in 1987. Since then she has sold hundreds of stories and serials here and abroad. She lives with her husband Tony in a 400-year-old cottage and enjoys walking her dogs in the beautiful Dorset countryside.

My first sale was…
A poem to Pony Magazine when I was eight!

My family think my writing is…
All based on them.

The best/worst thing about writing short stories for magazines is…
They’re very short. That’s the best and the worst thing.

Writer Service Announcement: Upcoming Deadlines

Posted on 09/02/2009 by  titania177

What do you think of the new look? I just discovered (after the rest of the world, it seems) that Blogger's own templates are not the only templates... there are loads of free templates out there for the taking. This one is called Rotterdam and is designed by Pannasmontata. I love the picture, something very calming about it.

On to the Writer Service Announcement. Here are some upcoming short story competition deadlines you might want to know about. (As usual, all links open new windows/tabs, so feel free to click all of them without fear.)

Top 10 Picture Resources for Writers

Posted on 09/02/2009 by  caro55

OK, it’s not a proper top ten, it’s just that I read somewhere that top ten lists attract blog traffic. The sites aren’t specifically for writers, either, but I’m trying to get better at thinking up snappy titles.

These ten websites – in no particular order – are some of my favourites for finding historical images to help with research. Whether I need to know about clothing, architecture or interior design, want to gain an idea of Victorian sense of humour or just want to be inspired by the atmosphere of a historical print, I love using pictures to aid my writing.

I hope these resources will be useful to others too. Even if you’re not writing historical fiction, take a look – there are some fascinating images out there.

Auntie Em

Posted on 09/02/2009 by  Myrtle

Like any writer who is supposed to be working on her novel, I spend a lot of time analysing my blog stats (this activity comes under the General Procrastination category, along with cake-baking, deciding to sew a button on something you haven't worn in months, having to dash out to the bookshop for more "research", and staring out the window).

During the course of my analysis it has come to my notice that not everyone comes here to read my mundane ramblings. Some of you actually want advice on stuff. My stats reveal that folk have come here looking for words of wisdom on:

First date nerves
Viakal side effects
"What Not To Wear" (with particular reference to Ugg Boots)
Pineapple health risks

Because I'm a guilt-ridden ex-Catholic / first-born, I feel responsible and have therefore decided to impart ALL my wisdom in one handy post. For ONE DAY ONLY, consider me your agony aunt...

Time travelling junk

Posted on 09/02/2009 by  KatyJackson

The funny thing about time travel is that we all do it all of the time. Or until we're dead at any rate. It's the ultimate eco-friendly mode of transport: no machinery required (just one more-or-less functioning mind each); only a modest daily calorific allowance needed (wholly from renewable sources of energy); and all contained within a human-shaped capsule (with self-healing properties and infinite variation).

GLASGOW HAS SNOW AT LAST

Posted on 08/02/2009 by  ireneintheworld

Oooh we got snow! And it looks like the real thing; there has been the odd fifteen minute flurry over the last few weeks but this is lying on road and roof. Maybe I won’t have to go to the dentist on Tuesday. Luckily I can work from home if I have to but I can’t see it lasting – we don’t get snow in Glasgow! Well not the kind that grinds everything to a halt, not for years and years. In fact I only remember it happening once, when my son was about three; 1979, maybe. Diesel had frozen and there was no public transport – main roads were packed white and hardly a car to be seen.

Strictly Writing - Why you have to be two-faced to be a writer

Posted on 08/02/2009 by  susieangela

A new year. A new start. Or so I told myself.
Last year, I finished my novel. I edited it to within an inch of its life. I scrutinised every page, every line for excess baggage. I ruthlessly strangled, shot or poisoned my ‘darlings’ – those dearly-beloved phrases or paragraphs that Just Won’t Do in the cold light of day, however much one may secretly admire them. I made sure the timescales worked, that there was enough ‘light and shade’ in the writing, that the plot made sense. I wrote, and re-wrote my synopsis, my hook paragraph, my covering letter to agents. I checked my margins, my headers, my page numbering. I began to send my submissions out.
Time, then, to get on with the new one. And when better than in January, with its whispers of new beginnings, fresh starts?
I stalled.
It’s Second Novel Syndrome, I told myself. It’ll pass as soon as you get into the writing.
But still I stalled.
