Clinics, strange dreams and writers

Posted on 22/07/2008 by  Account Closed

Up while the nightingales were still around today – and what a glorious day it is, weather-wise – and into work early due to my morning appointment at the Surrey Park Clinic. This time they’re taking the tumour marker blood test (oh joy) so here’s hoping they don’t find anything drastic. Though if they discover my old school tie, that would be very useful, as I was never entirely sure where that went … Apparently too I should start taking more of the oestrogen HRT just to see if I balance out a bit. Little does the poor doctor know that a state of utter imbalance is actually normal for me. Ah well ...

Dear Kitty

Posted on 22/07/2008 by  piplarkin

Dear Kitty,

People say that time heals all wounds. And we have the recordable DVD now, right? So why can’t someone invent a fast forward button you can press after a break up? A year if you want to think about dating other women. Three months if you want to hear her name without feeling sick. Two weeks if you want to stop obsessively calling her house and hanging up.

Great idea, no? All of this is just dead time anyway since I’m just dragging my body around, not eating, not working, not sleeping, not listening to any conversation if it isn’t about her.

Okay, so maybe a fast forward button is unrealistic. How about cryogenic freezing? Or cloning? Or, I mean, is it too much to ask that my dentist put me into a coma until the urge to park outside her workplace has gone? (Apparently it is, but the Constable was very understanding.)

Maybe I should just stick to the original plan: spend the next six months drunk with a notice round my neck saying ‘sober me up in 2010’? The cryogenic freezing would be better on my liver, that’s all.

Fed Up, Burnley

Foot rubbing, literature events and the Honorary Chaplain

Got in this morning to at least six zillion emails. What is wrong with people? Why do they want to communicate so much? Honestly, anyone would think they had nothing better to do … That said, most of it is my fault for sending out so much stuff last week which needed a quick response, mainly in the catering area. So I am hoist by my own petard. Ooh, I do love a good petard.

I think I got most of it under control by lunchtime though – so I could lie back and enjoy my reflexology session with a clear conscience. In fact, I was so relaxed that I drifted off towards the end and woke myself up by snoring. How unpleasant for poor Emily! Still at least the rest of her week will be easy. Getting my session over on a Monday is no doubt a good thing for her ...

How to sell short story collections, Part II

Posted on 21/07/2008 by  titania177

Selling my book is very much on my mind right now. Following on from my previous post, an interesting article in Forbes magazine called Web Savvy Authors Reap Fame and Fortune caught my eye - unsurprisingly. About a first time author who decides to self-publish her "historical fiction tome" when she can't find a publisher:.......

Books galore and the Bad Wife

Much to my joy, Maloney's Law is now up on the PD Publishing website and includes the whole of the first chapter for your delectation - you can read it here (see full post for links and what I like to think is one of my best books!). Go on, you know you want to ... And though I say it myself and probably shouldn't (but, hell, when has that ever stopped this ego-obsessed author??), it's a damn good first chapter. Enjoy ...

Writers on writers: My interview with Vanessa Gebbie in Eclectica

Posted on 20/07/2008 by  titania177

I was delighted a few months ago when Vanessa asked me if I would do an interview with her for the lit magazine Eclectica. That interview is now published in their July/August issue. It was a wonderful experience, thinking up questions for a good friend and fellow writer with whom I feel a strong writing kinship: I believe we approach writing in a similar way, although our stories (and now her poems and novel!) are very different. Her collection, Words from A Glass Bubble, published by Salt, is a must-have for anyone who loves lyrical and imaginative writing with a punch, stories that leave a lasting impression, for hours, days, and much longer, stories with strong voices and many, many layers. Go and get a copy. That's today's message.

Vanessa and I met through flash fiction, and she opened me up to the whole world of flash with the Blastettes in the literary writers' forum she created, the Fiction Workhouse. I tried to think of questions to ask her that I would want to be asked. A little snippet to whet your appetite..........

A LITTLE BIT OF MEMOIR

Posted on 19/07/2008 by  ireneintheworld

In my safe childhood I was allowed to play outside, by myself, unsupervised, all day; hours and hours spent catching frogs, climbing monkey-puzzle trees, killing water rats and boiling dead bees.

Life in Carnwadric was quiet but interesting; right across the road from us was an old internment camp that used to house Italian prisoners of war. In it there was a big empty house on the hill, a forest, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries, rose bushes and tall daisies, wild onions and, according to my little brother, dead Germans!

Have updated the Maloney section of my website (see full post for links) today with the latest information on purchasing and prices, and am also trying to catch up with my eBook reading. And Lord H has nipped out super-early today to get to Kingston to buy an i-phone. Apparently, he was Number 4 in the queue at ... um ... 8.15 this morning. And he has one, hurrah! So, I am no longer the person in the flat with the newest - or coolest - phone. Ah well, my glory only lasts for a moment, you know ...
