I'm sure many of us are familiar with this book! They've just brought out the first version aimed solely at the children's market. Is this a marketing ploy or does anyone know / think there is a value in buying a separate book for this genre?

Sue, I'd say it depends on the price. If that's your speciality and it's comparitively cheaper thatn the full version then it would save you ploughing among all the stuff that isn't relevant to your genre.
