Small / independent presses  Livi at 12:41 on 28 April 2009

Hello,

I think this has probably been asked many times before, but I’m trying to make a list of small/medium/independent publishers who encourage direct submissions.

I have submitted to Snowbooks but wondered if there were any others out there who are approachable.

Any more to try?

Thanks

Livi

There used to be a very useful webpage of large, medium and small publishers and their specialisms/interests, but it disappeared. However, I did find this:

The Maia press is good and Maggie Hamand who runs it is lovely. I have a feeling that they are not taking submissions at the moment because their letter box got jammed and the council had to come and remove the pile of manuscripts that was blocking up the street.

Check the websites for Biscuit Press, Cinnamon Press, Salt (no novels - short stories and poetry only.) Crime novelists can try Creme de la Crime.

PaperBooks are worth a try.

You could try Bluechrome in the future, but they're not taking submissions at the moment, I gather.

If you can dream up any kind of a Welsh connection, try Seren.

Nothing to stop you submitting to any publisher in WAAYB who don't actually say 'agented submissions only', of course.

Naomi, was that the 'Branching Out' list? It was fab - it looks as if the initiative for librarians which supported it has ended. Shame.

I couldn't say, Emma. It just popped up on a google search.

Hi
There is a new independent publisher who specialises in childrens and young adult fiction. You can check them out at www.rebelbookspublishing.co.uk.

Flambard Press have given me my big chance.
I've not got an agent and submitted directly to them.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Livi,
I've heard good things about Tindal Street Press - http://www.tindalstreet.co.uk if you and/or your novel are based in the English 'regions', i.e. not London or the South East.

Thanks everyone.

For anyone else who is looking, Legend Press also have a list of independent publishers on their homepage (I don't know if the list is any good, it's for some kind of competition they are running).

I also had an email from Long Barn saying they are not accepting submissions at the moment.

Thanks

Long Barn have just broken all records: 10 seconds for my email to elicit the response
'Thank you but this is not of interest to us
Miranda Stanley
Long Barn Books Ltd'

I assume this is an automated response (unless Miranda Stanley is working at 9.10pm and prioritises submission emails)! So, yes, I don't think they're accepting submissions.
