Has anyone heard of the Brit Writers Awards?  Katie Mayes at 12:42 on 08 January 2010

Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had heard of this:

http://www.britwriters.co.uk/

It's a new comp with a stonking prize fund but an exceptionally high entry fee - not sure whether to be dubious or not.

What are your thoughts? or has anyone entered?

Many thanks
Katie

One of the judges is Tania Hershman who is a fellow WriteWorder, so one assumes it's legit.

oooh! That's alright then - I can add it to my list of future possibilities.

I've become a bit wary after a friend of mine paid to enter a comp last year and within a week of doing so, they disappeared. It wasn't a lot to enter but has put her off entering pay-to-enter comps.

Thanks

Katie x

Yes, it's legit, and aiming to be big.

It has a good reputation already. properly organised, backed and run.

Good luck with it...

Yes, I'm going for it. It's actually being associated with the York Literature Festival. I'm sure there'll be trillions of entries, but hey - why not?

Oh I'm not entering - I am no where near good enough for such a big prize as that.

I just wondered about it as I keep coming across it when I look for smaller comps.

Oh, shame - are you sure?
But if you're looking for smaller comps, I've found Vanda Inman's WriteSpace do good comps (I won £50 third prize with it a while ago).

Maybe everyone knows it already, but this is a good site for finding comps:

Literature Training also has the latest comps, under Jobs and Opportunities.

•Entrants may submit as many pieces of work as they like to the Brit Writers' Awards 2010 for a one-off admin fee of £10.95

That's not bad at all, considering the prize is £10,000 and the fee allows you to enter as many pieces as you like. There are comps out there offering far less prize money and charging fees of around £6 per story - this compares very well, I'd say!

Re: Has anyone heard of the Brit Writers Awards?  Katie Mayes at 15:02 on 10 January 2010

Oh sorry - I didn't realise you could enter more than one piece of work. In which case...the entry fee isn't so bad!

Re: Has anyone heard of the Brit Writers Awards?  CarolS at 11:26 on 11 January 2010

I think they're mildly insane to allow people to enter an unlimited amount of pieces for the single fee. It's good for us writers, but I'd hate to be on the other end of that! Also, I noticed that they're allowing dissertations and research papers as part of the non-fiction category. Yikes.

Did anyone enter in the end? I entered all my stories and feel sorry for the judges now

They had 21.000 entries!

Not much competition then...
