So, I have a copy of “Self editing for fiction writers” by Renni Brown and David King and “On Writing” by Stephen King, and a Collins Thesaurus and Dictionary combo.

What other books of our craft are recommended, or even considered essential? I’m particularly looking for material relating to sophistication and characterisation.

Has anyone got the new version of “Self editing for fiction writers”? do I need to upgrade?

Any opinions would be very much appreciated.

Well, the books I am going to recommend has nthing to do with what you're looking for,but theyhave to do with thinking about writing itself.

Negotiating with the Dead by Margaret Atwood, and
Six Memos for the Next Millenium by Italo Calvino

The Atwood book in particular is sort of a bookabout the metaphysical state of the writer.

Calvino deals with topics like 'lightness' in writing. It's only 96 pages, but it's a wondrous read.

I also recommends David Lodge's books about writing.

You must get The Oxford Manual of Style. I bought mine through a book club and, at first glance, decided it was a waste of money. But, being me, I never got round to returning it and now I’m heartily glad I didn’t. It’s dog-eared and covered in red wine stains - and I would kill anyone who tried to take it off me… so it must be good!
