In a bit of a pickle regarding capital letter on the points of the compass. Is there an official rule here?

Is it North of north?

I know capitals are used in names e.g. West Germany.

But was West Germany West of East Germany or west of East Germany?

Answers on a postcard please... or just use this thread whichever you prefer.

Usually, they're only capitalised in names, you're right. So

We rode west, till we reached East Germany.

To the north, we could see South America.

I've just looked over my work and I'm inconsistent with it anyway! Hmmm, more revision for me!
