    presumably, Pa tua is mentioned in the preceding sentence.

    Therefore, to tighten it completely, whats wrong with


    "He screamed."

    If we know it's about Pa'Tua, then we know he's a "he"... so...

    When the whole horror of his position forced itself with an agony of apprehension upon his frightened mind, Pa' Tua for a space lost his reason. He screamed aloud, and the hollow of the rocks took up his cries and hurled them back mockingly


    The position was horrifying and Pa'Tua was frightened. He screamed. It echoed.
