Who can upload work to the site?
Full and Community Members may upload work to the archive and groups. Trial Members may upload one piece of work.
How do I upload work to the site?
To upload work you first should be logged in to the site. You should then go to your My WriteWords page where you will find a link to 'Click here to upload new work'. Follow the link and select the main category for the work (fiction, poetry etc). Complete the following page with the details of your work. Once submitted the work will appear automatically in the archive and will be visible on your members' profile page.
How do I upload work to a Writers' Group?
First you need to have joined the group. Go to the Groups home page and select the group you are interested in. If there are spaces in the group a link will appear at the top of the group saying "click here to join this group". You may have to wait for a day or two before the group application is processed. Once successfully in the group you can upload one piece of work to the group at any one time. You should upload only short extracts only - not full chapters. Longer work should be uploaded to the archive only.
To upload work to the group go through the same procedure as above but now that you are part of a group a checkbox will appear offering you the possibility of uploading the work to the group.
If you have a work already on the site and would like to upload it to the group you can do this by editing the work from your My WriteWords page and then selecting the group checkbox.
How do I post a new topic in the forum?
The WriteWords forum contains a number of 'sub-forums' such as the 'Inspiration & Ideas' forum, and the 'Introduce Your Work' forum. To post a new topic, first select the most appropriate sub-forum from the list on the right hand side of the forum home page. At the top of the sub-forum page, click the 'New Topic' button.
Please ensure the subject field of your topic makes clear what the topic is about. Avoid eye-catching, but meaningless headings like 'Oh no, not again' or 'Please help me' - instead go for 'Dealing with another rejection' or 'Puncutation advice needed'.
My email has changed, how do I change it on the site?
Go to your My WriteWords Page and click edit profile. You can edit your email and other details there.
Will my work and postings to the site be visible in search engines?
The following areas of the site are NOT visible to internet search engines:
- posts to the lounge forum
- posts to group forums
- any work which has been set to 'writewords members only' or 'group members only'
- any comments on such work
I'm worried about people stealing my work - who can read uploaded work?
We offer members several options when uploading work to the site. The first 'Everyone' means that non-members can view the work as well as members. When this setting is selected, the work may be visible in Internet search engines such as Google.
The next setting is 'WriteWords Members Only'. This means that only people who have gone through the site's registration process and become members will be able to view the work. When this setting is selected, the work will not be visible in Internet Search Engines.
The third option is 'Group Members Only'. This restricts access to the work to other members of any Writers' Group you belong to. Again, it will not in this case be visible in search engines.
Finally the 'Only Me' option is available - this is sometimes useful if you want to upload part of a work to the site.
Please note that no guarantees can be made as to the security of any of these options. The copyright of the work remains yours, but we cannot offer any guarantees that nobody will steal work from the site.
Does work uploaded to WriteWords count as published?
This is a grey and subjective area. We do not think of ourselves as a publisher as work uploaded to the site does not undergo any selection process. Nevertheless, work visible on the internet is considered by some to be published. For this reason we offer the different levels of visibility mentioned above. If you are concerned about your work's status as 'published' or 'unpublished' you should select the 'Work Visible to WriteWords Members Only' option when uploading work. This will ensure that the work is visible only to the private group of individuals who are WriteWords members. It will not be visible on the internet and so is unlikely to be considered as published. This is however only our opinion - if you are really concerned about the status of your work DO NOT UPLOAD IT!
Is it safe to store my work on WriteWords?
No! You should not use WriteWords as a primary storage facility for your work. We cannot make any guarantees about the safety of materials uploaded to the site and will not offer any compensation should they be lost.
