A superb introduction to one of the most shamefully neglected and underrated writers of the C19th. Bierce is a master of the short story, possessing a mordantly witty, cynical, clear eye and style, with which he mercilessly exposes the follies and delusions of man. The only major writer to serve in the American Civil War, his tales, 'Chickamauga' and 'Owl Creek Bridge' in particular, will haunt you forever with their brutal but poetic revelations of the obscenities of war. Also included, 'My Favourite Murder' and 'Oil of Dog'. Read, enjoy, and feel rather ashamed!
