Richard has an honours degree in philosophy and psychology from the University of Oxford, and a first class diploma in psychological counselling from Roehampton College, London.

He has worked in education for most of his professional life, including as Head of Department in a Further Education college. His section had 50 full and part time staff and offered a wide range of courses including literacy, English for Speakers of Other Languages, GCSE and higher level programmes. During this time he wrote many articles and several contributions to books on educational matters. He also organized and ran numerous training courses.

Since leaving the teaching world he have been a self-employed writer and has completed five full length volumes of family history for a Canadian client. He recently wrote and self-published an account of the couple who ran the first professional ski school in Scotland. This sold out the first and second printings and is currently on a third.

He also continues to tutor speakers of other languages with business and academic writing.
